UPDATE: After considering the forecast for Saturday, the Pirate Jamboree committee and the dashing buccaneers have decided to move the Battle of Ocracoke earlier in the day. The Battle will take place at 11am or Noon, not 3pm.
As of Friday night, the Brigands' Bazaar is still scheduled to be outside in the Community Square.
We will post further updates on Saturday morning. Arrgh!
As mentioned below, the Info Booth will stand sentry at the Community Square. No surrender! It will remain open all day to help sailors and landlubbers navigate the village in search of Jamboree festivities. Be sure to stop by for the latest updates!
UPDATE: From the Pirate Jamboree committee: "As of Friday morning, the latest forecast for Saturday suggests the possibility that the rain may not become an issue until later in the day, mid-to-late afternoon. We continue to hope we can hold the Brigand's Bazaar in the Community Square, that final decision will be made by 5 pm today."
The organizers of the 2nd annual Blackbeard's Pirate Jamboree say the events will go on as planned in spite of the forecast for timber-shivering wind and weather. They are making contingency plans for rain locations for some of the outdoor events, but the Pirate Encampment (at the Wahab property near the NPS docks) will stay authentic – which means outside – no matter the weather. Arrgh! Ye pyrats are made o' hardy stuff!
Friday evening's events were already scheduled to be indoors at the Community Center and they will continue as planned.
"We're waiting for the 5pm NOAA update on Friday to make some decisions about Saturday," said Jamboree committee member Daphne Bennink. "We all know how dynamic the weather can be, so the pirate battle could be a last-minute call."
Saturday's events kick off with the pirate invasion of Silver Lake harbor at 10am. It's possible the invasion could be postponed until 11am, and could replace the planned battle at 3pm.
The insurance covering the plundering pirate vessels would be null and void during a small-craft advisory. Although pirates of yore would've shouted "No quarter given!" and charged into battle in a full-blown gale, our modern day buccaneers chart a more prudent course. They'll harken to the NOAA update before they put to sea.
Daphne mentioned that although we've got inclement weather heading our way, "the winds seems to be in our favor. Rain is the issue."
If necessary, the Brigands' Bazaar (located in the Community Square) will move to the Ocracoke School gym.
Events scheduled to take place on the Books To Be Red stage will take place just a few steps away in Deepwater Theater.
Starting at 5pm, the events scheduled for the Books to Be Red stage will take place in the Community Center.
Through it all, the Info Booth will stand sentry at the Community Square. No surrender! It will remain open all day to help sailors and landlubbers navigate the village in search of Jamboree festivities. Be sure to stop by for the latest updates!
Tune in to WOVV 90.1 FM (online at wovv.org) at 10am Friday to hear Daphne provide the latest scuttlebutt on the Jamboree. She also hopes that residents and visitors will avail themselves of the updated information and spread it via the social networks and the old-fashioned coconut telegraph.
We will continue to update this story and the Current's Facebook page as needed.
Avast me hearties! Yo ho!
