OCC Kids Brought Back the Sun
During a long week of rainy days, Ms. Juju Baker and her students were inspired to turn the picture book, How the Sun was Brought Back to the Sky by Mirra Ginsburg, into a one-act play. It’s the story of how some little animals go off to find the sun – they discover he’s grumpy and has forgotten how to shine. They climb the highest mountain for some good advice from the moon (who was attended by “moon mermaids”), and then they’re off on a mission to polish the sun, make him happy, and help him shine again. Add some posterboard and glitter and you’ve got costumes and a set.
“It was so much fun,” said Ms. Juju. Juju spent the summer teaching OCC’s Big Kids Camp – the summer class for five, six, and seven year-olds. (Rumor has it every day with Ms. Juju is so much fun. She makes sure of it.)
“We had a very good turn-out for the play,” she said. “There was more than enough food at the potluck, and a big cake for the graduates. It was a big family picnic – people brought blankets and beach chairs.”
The graduates sang “The future’s looking good for me, I’m ready to go!” and “Adios, amigos.” They also played the clouds in How the Sun Was Brought Back to the Sky.
Six children have turned four and will head to the “big” school to start Pre-Kindergarten on Monday. Congrats and best of luck to Isaid Bravo, Kai King, Javier “JJ” Moreno Ibarra, Jenny Ricardez Garcia, Kimberly Rodriguez, and Stephanie Flores-Esparza.
Most of the graduates will come back to play with their friends at the “little” school after school. Ocracoke Child Care provides after-school care for children up to age 12 from 3-5:15 pm Monday through Friday. Call Chaeli at 252-928-4131 for more information about OCC.
