A Daughter of the Confederacy
Join local author Pat Garber tonight at the Ocracoke Library for a program about her book, Heart Like a River.

The program will begin at 7pm, and is hosted by Ocracoke Friends of the Library.

Pat has written several books about Ocracoke, including Ocracoke Wild and Little Sea Horse and the Story of the Ocracoke Ponies. Her most recent book is Heart Like a River. It is the story, based on his diary and letters, of her great-grandfather Sgt-Major Newsom E Jenkins and the four years he spent fighting in the Civil War under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E Lee. Interspersed with Jenkins's actual diary entries are Pat's personal essays titled "A Great-Grandaughter's Perspective."

Tonight Pat will describe her emotional journey as she read and transcribed Sgt. Major Jenkins’ diary and letters, struggling to come to terms with her own confusing and controversial legacy as a “daughter of the Confederacy.”
