OVFD Update

Check out the progress being made on the new Ocracoke fire station!

A lot has happened since the ground breaking on April 15, 2013.  Tyke and his crew are now putting up the fascia and soffits.  Inside, the studs for the rooms are now in place along with steps to the upper level.  The plumbing, electrical, and HVAC is roughed in.

Outside, the bulkhead on the right side of the building is progressing nicely.  More bulkheads will go in on the left side and at the back of the property.  Once this week’s inspection occurs, then we anticipate the company will come to insulate the building.  Following that, the drywall will be hung.  The kitchen cabinets are being built, the kitchen appliances have been selected, as well as the material for the kitchen countertops, and the drawers and cabinet door pulls.  All of the doors, except for the bay doors have been delivered and will soon be installed.

This week, members of the OFPA board, the building committee, and some of the firemen met with Jay Lilley, the building superintendent, for a walk through.  This gave everyone an opportunity to see the amazing work that has gone into this project, but will soon be covered by the insulation and drywall.  Until you watch a project like this from day one, it is hard to imagine the quantity of work that is required.  Already covered is the huge amount of rebar and concrete that went into the floor and exterior walls.  Unless something really dramatic occurs, this building will be here for a long, long time.

A special thanks to those of you who have continued to send donations through the year.  Every donation helps to lower the amount of money we will need to borrow to finish the construction.  We are still anticipating an occupancy date of late November or early December.  We have been blessed with excellent weather so far and hope it will continue.
