Keep on Trawlin'

Shrimpers arrived by boat to protest a possible trawl ban in Pamlico Sound.

About 700 people turned out at a public meeting in New Bern on Tuesday – several by trawl boat – where members of the Marine Fisheries Commission advisory committees considered a possible shrimp trawl ban.

In a small victory for commercial fishermen, Tim Hergenrader's petition was voted down by all four MFC advisory committees. The finfish, sea turtle, water quality, and shellfish advisory committees all voted to recommend that the Marine Fisheries Commission deny the petition. The action almost guarantees the petition will be voted down by the MFC at their August meeting.

Ocracoke Current reporter Megan Spencer attended the public meeting and is working on a follow-up story to her article from July 10. Stay tuned!
