Dredging Up Some News
NCDOT ferry division spokesperson Steve Abbott told the Current that the dredging project is complete. So why aren't the ferries using that channel? Blame it on the weather.
"Before we can switch back to the original ferry route, the Coast Guard must re-set the channel markers," Abbott told us in an email. "The water has been too choppy for that the last few days. If the wind dies down and they can do that this week, we hope to be able to go back to the old route as soon as possible afterward."
Abbott says he will send out an official press release from the ferry division as soon as the change is made. The ferry schedule will be updated as well – "the shorter route means we can add more trips," he said.
Meanwhile, the ferries will continue to use the longer, alternate channel. Click here for the schedule.
The summer schedule for the Hatteras-Ocracoke route is expected to go into effect on May 7th. We'll keep you updated on the Current as soon as the information is available.
