30 Days to Hatteras

Press Release

Hyde County Emergency Management Director Justin Gibbs has been in contact with the NCDOT Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry Operations Center, the US Coast Guard Sector North Carolina and the NC Emergency Management Area 2 Coordinator regarding the status of the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry operations. He has provided several updates on the status of the channel, as well as the agencies providing assistance to Hyde Emergency Management Operations.

- No alternate route was located during the channel assessment that occurred last weekend.

- The dredging operation reported a water depth of 3 feet between the #12 red and green markers.

- Dredging will possibly be complete in 30 days and ferry service may not resume until the dredging is complete.

- Because of the ferry situation, ground transport for patients has not been possible. Those in need of critical care will be served by Med-Evac air operations.

- In the event Med-Evac air transport is unavailable, the US Coast Guard has committed to providing air operations on a case by case basis.

- The Coast Guard has also committed boats to assist with patient transport for patients that don't meet the criteria for medical evacuation by helicopter. Patients will be transported by boat to the Hatteras Ferry Dock and transferred to Dare County EMS.

- In addition, the Coast Guard has committed boats for the delivery of mail and medications.
