Works by local artists will be auctioned off this Saturday to benefit the island's only daycare center.

The silent auction will be held at Down Creek Gallery, which will open at noon for the bidding to begin. Throughout the day (12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.) the gallery will be open and all are welcome to view the art and place a bid.

From 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. there'll be a reception, with refreshments provided by Zillie's Island Pantry and live music from Rob King. All proceeds will benefit the non-profit child care.

The silent auction items include original artwork, jewelry, and photography from local artists. The event was organized by Ocracoke Child Care's board president, Marissa Gross.

"We've had lost of great fundraisers over the past year," she said. "But I thought it was time to do something different."

Marissa is a photographer and has some of her work hanging at Down Creek Gallery. She got the idea for the auction when she thought to donate a piece of her own. She's very happy with the response from other artists and shop owners for their generosity with donations. And she hopes a lot of people come out for the show and reception.

"Of course, no one's required to buy anything – it's just lots of fun to get together in the middle of winter," she said.

If you get outbid on your choice of artwork, or you just stop by for a glass of wine, you can still make a donation to Ocracoke Child Care. Donations are always welcome! OCC is a 4-star rated daycare program, and its all-volunteer board includes Marissa Gross, Kristen Lord, Brooke Wells, Guille Moreno, Janille Turner, Karmen Laton, Jetta Brown, Leslie Monticone and Tina Vander Myde.
