Ferry Routes Along NC Coast Suspending Operations Ahead of Hurricane Sandy

Updated 11 years ago Press Release

Update: The last ferry is leaving Ocracoke Island today at 2 p.m. to Cedar Island. If you want to be on it, you have 10 minutes!

MOREHEAD CITY — The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division has suspended operations on the Currituck/Knotts Island route as Hurricane Sandy approaches.

Due to winds in the area, the water level in Currituck Sound has dropped low enough to prevent ferry operations.

In addition, the 1 p.m. departure of the Ocracoke/Cedar Island ferry will be delayed until 2 p.m.

Earlier this morning, ferry operations on the Hatteras Inlet route were suspended due to high water over N.C.12 in Ocracoke. NCDOT remains on alert and ready to activate emergency operations as needed.

While other ferry routes will run according to regular schedule as long as possible, additional operations will likely be suspended as conditions deteriorate. Operations will return to normal as soon as conditions are deemed safe.
