Art Opening at Ocracoke Gallery
Kitty graduated with a BA in studio Arts from the University of Pittsburgh in 1975. She has been selling paintings since the late 1970s when she opened her first studio gallery, “Soundside Studio” on Ocracoke Island. She was one of the founding members of the Ocracoke Art cooperative that operated in the 1980s. In the mid to late 1980s she worked as an illustrator for the Winston Salem Journal and as a freelance artist.
Since 1991 Kitty has been teaching art at Ocracoke School and continuing to work as an exhibiting artist. She is currently working in mixed media and acrylics. She finds her students inspiring.
“I love working with children of all ages. The youngest help me see things in a new way everyday. The older students have really interesting and creative takes on living in this world today,” she said. “I also like to see if I can find 100 beautiful things everyday. I love living on this beautiful island and my work reflects that. Sometimes I dip into the surreal or the spiritual.”
The Art Openings at Down Creek Gallery provide light refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres. Live music is now a part of each event. All are invited, locals and visitors, to share in these enjoyable, entertaining, social evenings with the local artist. The Openings are from 5:00 pm until 8:00pm.
