All agreed it was a great idea!

The market was abuzz with island residents and visitors, out to enjoy the perfect weather and do a little shopping. Plans are in the works for another market in August.

UPDATE: Homegrown, Handmade, Fresh-Caught!

Come on down Saturday morning to see the Community Square transformed into an open-air marketplace.

UPDATE: Homegrown, Handmade, Fresh-Caught!

What do clams, watercolors, and fig cake have in common? You can find them all – and more – tomorrow morning at the Community Square’s first Homegrown, Handmade, Fresh-Caught market.

The market will be open from 8 – 11 a.m. More than a dozen local crafters, artists, bakers and fishermen have signed up to have a table in the Square.

If you’ve never had Gaynelle’s fig cake, you need to run, not walk, to the Community Square. It will sell out fast!

Event organizer Merle Davis says there’s still more room for participants if anyone else wants to join in the fun. The space is free; the only requirement is that the wares you peddle are homegrown, handmade, or fresh-caught (no yard sale items!) Call her at 928-2587 to sign up.

The Market is the first of many public events in the Community Square scheduled for this year. On June 2nd, the Square will host the Ocrafolk Festival Dance with a Square Dance at 8 p.m., Aaron Caswell Band 9 p.m., and the Ocracoke Rockers at 10 p.m. On June 15th, the annual Women’s Arm Wrestling Tournament, this year benefiting both WOVV and OVFD, will take place in the Square, and July 4th brings a “Celebration on the Docks” with more fig cake (yum!), a dunking booth, fish cakes, and a square dance.
