Ronnie is O'Neal of the Week!

In September, Ronnie O'Neal leaves for Navy boot camp.

Until then, he'll be living on Ocracoke with his grandparents and working at The Island Ragpicker.  Ronnie will head first to the training center in Great Lakes, Illinois before traveling to San Antonio, Texas to train as a hospital corpsman.   As a dental assistant, there is only a "small chance" he'll serve in a combat zone.  Ronnie said it is much more likely he'll work in a clinic.

After graduating from Ocracoke School in 2011, Ronnie moved to Norfolk for a few months where he met lots of people with connections to the Navy.  He is excited about the medical training, and said his five year commitment should buy him some time to figure out what he wants to do.

Ronnie is O'Neal of the Week!

Ocracoke Current:  What did you have today for lunch?

Ronnie:  Turkey, from yesterday.

Ocracoke Current:  What's the farthest away from Ocracoke you've been?

Ronnie:  Atlanta, Georgia; Baltimore and Boone.  Those are the limits so far.

Ocracoke Current:  What's the last music show you saw?

Ronnie:  Don't put the band name in there.  Katelyn [Gaskill] made us go.  We got stuck in South Carolina in a truck with no a/c.  We were all ready to kill each other.

Ocracoke Current:  What's your favorite time of year?

Ronnie:  Fall is my favorite.  Everything is changing.  It's what I would consider nice outside.

Ocracoke Current:  I saw you running a lot this winter.

Ronnie:  Since the beginning of December I run from the campground to the pony pens and back.

Ocracoke Current:  Describe your dream day on Ocracoke.

Ronnie:  I can be specific.  It's going to the [Flying] Melon for breakfast and eating pain perdu, that french toast they have.  Then going to the Variety Store and picking up a bunch of terrible foods, going to the beach with all of my friends, and then going to the Cafe [Atlantic] for spinach lasagna.  That was all about food!
