Current Events for 3/2/12
Ocracoke School celebrates Homecoming with a whole evening of fun. Food sales begin at 4:00 p.m, so no need to cook dinner. Just come on out for hotdogs, BBQ sandwiches and baked goods. It could be your lucky night – buy a cake raffle ticket and find out!
At 5:00, the middle school girls will play basketball, followed by the middle school boys at approximately 5:45. The Cheer Club is going to put on a show at 6:15 – Go Dolpins!
The Dolphin Tank will transform temporarily from a basketball arena into a regal palace for the presentation of the Homecoming Court. These kids clean up nice and will be all decked out in their suits and dresses – a sight not to be missed! New this year, are royal titles for the freshmen (Count and Countess) and sophomores (Duke and Duchess). The Homecoming King and Queen will be selected from among the juniors and seniors, and crowned to great applause.
But that’s not all! There’s one more basketball game – Ocracoke Dolphins vs. Ocracoke Alumni. Admission to Homecoming events in $5 for adults and $3 for kids. Come on out and support Ocracoke School!
Weekend Happenings
On Saturday, Ocracoke’s student organization I SPEAK (Island Students Promoting Empowerment Among Kids) is hosting a teen advocacy training day at the Community Center. Youth age 11-18 are encouraged to attend the program, which runs from 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., with lunch and snacks provided. The event is sponsored by the statewide organization TRU (Tobacco Reality Unfiltered). Our own Ocracoke kids, along with kids from off the island, will gather to learn more about the tobacco-free movement and how to become a leader among their peers.
Kids’ Movie Night is back! Bring the youngens out to Deepwater Theater Saturday at 6:00 p.m. for a screening of “Puss in Boots.” For a $5 donation to Ocracoke Child Care, your child gets a movie night and a lots of delicious snacks. Raffle tickets for prizes are $1 each
At last month’s Kids’ Movie Night, fifty kids between the ages of 2 and 13 came out, accompanied by parents, grandparents and babysitters. Janet “Juju” Baker teaches at Ocracoke Child Care, and was thrilled to bring back the movie nights. She used to do them when she worked for Ocracoke Youth Center and says they were always her favorite fundraiser.
Ocracoke Child Care has more fundraisers coming up: Magic Mike will perform at the Community Center on March 31, the annual Hoop-A-Thon is scheduled for April 21st, and the annual BBQ dinner will take place in May. OCC is a five star rated center – the highest rating possible.
No need to cook Sunday dinner – let the Boy Scouts do it for you! Support our local troop at their Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser at Jason’s. They’ll start selling at noon until they run out, so get their early for Jason’s famous spaghetti (with or without meatballs), garlic bread and drink.

The United Methodist Women of Ocracoke UMC are putting out a NEW cookbook! If you would like to contribute a recipe for the cookbook, please email it to Kay Riddick at kayriddick@embarqmail.com. The Ocracoke UMC cookbook has been featured in "Our State" magazine and sells well throughout the village retail shops. Help them make this new cookbook truly awesome!
Temporary Tideland EMC office hours begin. From March 2 – May 4, 2012 the Tideland Office will only be open on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:30 p.m., and closed on the electric bill due dates of April 2nd and May 1st. Please plan accordingly. Payments can be made through the mail, over the phone, and on the internet. Normal office hours will resume on May 7th.
