Ocracoke is a busy place in the winter.

Interested in knowing what happened this week and what’s going to happen soon? You’ve clicked on the right story. “Current Events” will be a regular feature of up-to-the-minute info. You can also stay in touch by liking us on Facebook (Ocracoke Current) and following us on Twitter (@ocracokecurrent)!

Monday kicked off the week with a fast-paced, exciting, edge-of-seat, home basketball game – the last of the official season. The Lady Dolphins played against Weldon High School, in the first state play-off game we’ve ever hosted. All four teams have a lot to be proud of this year. Jenny is working on a season wrap-up story – look for it around Homecoming (March 2).

(Speaking of Homecoming… I got the details out of teacher Leslie Cole, so here’s the scoop: the festivities will start at 5:00 with middle school girls games, then the middle school boys will play. The Homecoming Court will be around 7 or 7:15. Our high school boys and girls will parade in their finery, and the crowning will commence. New gym, new Homecoming, said Leslie. This year there’ll be a Count and Countess crowned in 9th grade, a Duke and Duchess in 10th, and the King and Queen will be elected from the 11th and 12th graders. Basketball game to follow: high school boys vs. alumni. Fun!)

But wait – let’s not get too far ahead. What about this weekend?

Something wicked this way comes… and it’s the spring theater production of “Macbeth,” directed by high school English teacher Charles Temple. He’s holding auditions on Sunday and Monday, at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. respectively, in the school gym. Speaking and non-speaking parts are available. Performance dates are most likely May 2 – 5. If you’re 14 or older and have a hankering to tread the boards (act, on a stage), then come on out and give it a try!

And last, but not least, Sunday night brings us Craicdown in Concert at Deepwater Theater at 7:00 p.m. Craicdown are Ocrafolk Festival favorites and they’re back as part of the Ocracoke Alive winter concert series. It’s a family-friendly show of world acoustic folk music that’s not to be missed. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. What a bargain! The next time a summer visitor asks me what we all do here in the winter, I’ll have my answer ready: we go to meetings! (I’ve been to five myself this week and that doesn’t even count my Daisy Girl Scout troop’s meeting.) Lots of meetings means lots of good stuff in the works for Ocracoke. Local organizations are working hard on all sorts of interesting projects – stay tuned for more about the Ocrafolk Festival, Village Thrift, OVFD, Friends of the Library, Booster Club, and much more. If you’d like us to spread the word about your organization, please let us know. We welcome submissions and press releases as well.

Coming up soon are Spirit Week, Ocracoke Child Care fundraisers, baseball games, I SPEAK, school plant sale, school science fair, and the WOVV meeting. Keep checking Ocracoke Current for the most current news on the island.
