Update: How to Help Ocracoke
The Ocracoke Disaster Relief Team has put out these notices about donating and volunteering. You can also check out their Facebook page for regular updates about what is needed for the community's recovery efforts.
*INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL SUPPLY DONATIONS*
Please contact us at ocracokedisasterrelief@gmail.com before purchasing any supplies for our relief efforts, or planning a trip to Ocracoke.
While we do our best to keep everyone updated on our community needs, that list is incredibly fluid, and we want to best serve those caring individuals looking to aid our community in this difficult time.
Furthermore, the ferry routes are rigorously monitored, and NCDOT requires us to validate those interested in bringing supplies 24 hours before their arrival. Any parties who arrive to the ferry without validation, unfortunately, will not be allowed to make the crossing to Ocracoke.
Thank you so much for your patience and understanding while we coordinate the relief effort. The road ahead is long and difficult, but with the support of the Ocracoke Community near and far, we will rebuild.
*INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL VOLUNTEERS*
Thank you to all of the amazing people who have reached out to volunteer, we would not be able to complete this journey without you.
We have restructured our volunteer force to go through the following four organizations. Please contact them if you would like to volunteer your time on the island:
Samaritan’s Purse
https://www.samaritanspurse.org
Christian Aid Ministry
https://www.christianaidministries.org
North Carolina Baptists on Mission
https://baptistsonmission.org
United Methodist Church Regional Disaster Response Center
Email twig@nccumc.org
As much as we would like to facilitate the arrival of every caring individual who wants to help us, we simply do not have the resources of these larger organizations.
If you are unable to volunteer with these organizations, please consider donating to the Outer Banks Community Foundation and indicate you would like your funds allocated to Ocracoke Disaster Relief, https://www.obcf.org/donate-now/disaster-relief-fund-donate/
We cannot express how grateful we are to those who have reached out to help our community - it's a gratitude that exceeds words. We hope to see you here soon!
Ocracoke Current Suggested Monetary Donation Sites:
There are two gofundme campaigns that the Ocracoke Current will vouch for. We know the people who started them and we trust the money will get to those in need.
Ocracoke Disaster Relief or Ocracoke Island Hurricane Dorian Relief
If you are an off-island property owner whose home didn't get flooded, please consider allowing some of Ocracoke's hundreds of residents with flood-damaged homes to stay in your cottage. Send an email to ocracokedisasterrelief@gmail.com.
