Ocracoke Offers New Way to Escape
Ocracoke in the off-season has been a source of inspiration for many. Ocracoke residents Ruth Jordan and Marcy Brenner were on a winter morning walk down ramp 72 when the topic turned to escape rooms. Both agreed it sounded like an exciting idea and “the island should have one.” The search began in earnest for a space and through collaborative effort, their room was born, created specifically for the island with bits of local lore and history thrown in.
Ocracoke Escape Room opens to the public on Saturday, May 25th at Coyote Music Den in Community Square, 284 Irvin Garrish Hwy 12, on the harbor across from the lighthouse. They are now accepting bookings, and the best way to make a reservation is online. Reservations are available Saturday/Sunday 3pm to 9pm. And on Wednesday/Thursday starting at 11am to 9pm. This schedule will run through September and then by-reservation for the rest of the year.
Ocracoke Escape Room is described as a real-life, beat-the-clock pirate adventure. Sally, the first player to “escape” said, “The fun starts the moment you walk through the door, the puzzles are challenging!”
The Room was created from a collaborated original story. Historical research, the script and the puzzles were designed and built, some from antique pieces of furniture, by Jonathan Edwards and crew of Port City Tour Co. & Escape Rooms, Beaufort, NC.
Escape rooms evolved from video games and bring epic stories to life in a one-of-a-kind experience. Participants enter an immersive world where they race the clock while finding clues, solving intriguing puzzles and riddles, and discovering keys or combinations, in order to successfully complete the mission and escape the room in an hour or less. Truth is, you’re not really locked in and can get out at any time. Escape games provide activities that rely on logic, critical thinking, your wits and instincts, and person-to-person interaction and communication. Beating an escape room (three clues or less) requires teamwork, speed, creativity and patience.
