Current Events Week of May 15-21
Monday, May 15th:
3pm: Hyde County meeting re: proposed 2% increase in occupancy tax. This meeting @ the Community Center is for lodging businesses, OCBA Board members, and Occupancy Tax Board. The public is welcomed to attend that meeting to hear the discussion.
6pm: Hyde County FY 2017-2018 Budget Workshop: The FY 2017-2018 Budget Workshop will be held on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 6pm for public comment at the Hyde County Courthouse Multi-purpose room and the Ocracoke Community Center using electronic conferencing equipment.
Tuesday, May 16th:
Ferries! The Hatteras-Ocracoke route adds more runs as of today!
Wednesday, May 17th:
8:30pm: Sing out! It's Karaoke Night @ Ocracoke Oyster Co.!
Thursday, May 18th:
3pm: Live Music! Martin Garrish & Lou Castro @ Ocracoke Oyster Company! Come out to hear some amazing guitar playing, 3–6pm.
6:30pm: Book Fair Family Night @ the Library! All are welcome to join in the Fun! The Scholastic Book Fair is the major fundraiser for the Ocracoke School library.
7pm: Live music! Raygun Ruby, your favorite retro-80's band, plays 7-10pm @ Dajio!
Friday, May 19th:
3pm–7pm: Scholastic Book Fair @ Ocracoke Library. The Scholastic Book Fair is the major fundraiser for the Ocracoke School library.8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host Martin Garrish and Friends "Playing Your Ocracoke Memories" every Friday night through November. Beloved island native Martin Garrish shares songs – "sign posts of life" – and enchanting stories about growing up on Ocracoke. $15 for adults/$7 for kids under 12. More info at www.coyotemusic.net
Saturday, May 20th:
8am: Yard Sale! Multi-family Yard Sale @ 100 British Cemetery Road.
9am–1pm: Scholastic Book Fair @ Ocracoke Library. The Scholastic Book Fair is the major fundraiser for the Ocracoke School library.
10am: Friends of Portsmouth Island meeting @ NCCAT. Speakers include Dr. Erin Seekamp, NC State University, Jeff West, Interim Superintendent Cape Lookout National Seashore, and author Ray McAllister, new editor of the Doctor’s Creek Journal. All are welcome.
11:30am: Hands Across the Sand @ the Lifeguard Beach! Meet at 11:30am and get ready to hold hands for 15 minutes at noon joining many, many other seaside villages and towns up and down both coasts of the U.S. Hands Across the Sand protests offshore oil drilling and seismic testing.
12noon: Play Ball! Ocracoke Community Park hosts the Youth Baseball League games. The first game is at Noon; the second at 2pm. Come out and cheer on the Ocracoke Marlins and Rays! Concessions will be available.
1pm: Books Signing @ Books to Be Red: Deidre Ramsey and Simona Rae will be signing books in honor of their mother, Ellen Marie Cloud. Portsmouth: The Way it Was has been reprinted and enhanced. Stop by and give it a look.
6:30pm: Live music! Martin & Friends at Ocracoke Oyster Company, 6:30–9:30pm.
Sunday, May 21st:
May 21st: Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser @ Jason's Restaurant starting at 11:30am. Spaghetti Marinara or Spaghetti and Meat Sauce with Garlic Bread and a drink. $10/plate. Bake sale goodies and a huge Raffle! All proceeds go to help support Teresa and Albert O'Neal as she undergoes treatment for ovarian cancer.

May 27th: 12th Annual Firemen's Ball. Pig-pickin', Silent Auction, Live Auction, and Dance with the Dune Dogs and Ocracoke Rockers!
May 31st: Art Opening @ Down Creek Gallery for Ocracoke Current's own Crystal Canterbury. Come out and see new photographs by our favorite photographer! 5–8pm, with refreshment!
