Current Events Week of May 8–14
Monday, May 8th:
4pm: Play Ball! Ocracoke's Middle School Dolphins will host the FIRST EVER Ocracoke Middle School Baseball Championship home game! The Ocracoke Dolphins will take on Columbia at 5pm @ the Community Park. Go Dolphins!
5pm/6pm: Board of Commissioners Meeting Re-Schedule: The Hyde County Board of Equalization and Review will meet at 5:00pm and the Board of Commissioners meeting will follow at 6:00pm. These meetings will reconvene on Monday, May 8, 2017 at the Hyde County Courthouse Multi-purpose Room and the Ocracoke Community Center using electronic conferencing equipment. The previously scheduled meeting was unable to take place due to technical difficulties with the video conferencing equipment in Ocracoke. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone. The agenda and packets for the Monday May 1, 2017 Hyde County Board of Commissioners meeting are now available to the public. Hyde County FY 2017-2018 Budget Workshop: The FY 2017-2018 Budget Workshop will be held on Monday, May 8, 2017 immediately following the rescheduled Board of Commissioners meeting and again on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 6pm for public comment at the Hyde County Courthouse Multi-purpose room and the Ocracoke Community Center using electronic conferencing equipment.

Wednesday, May 10th:
7pm: Trivia Night @ Gaffer's. Only $2 to play; this week's proceeds will benefit Ocracoke's home daycare program. Come out and show off how smart you are! There are great prizes, too!
Thursday, May 11th:
7pm: Live music! Raygun Ruby, your favorite retro-80's band, plays 7-10pm @ Dajio!
Friday, May 12th:
11am: British Cemetery Ceremony at the British Cemetery. This year is the 75th anniversary of the sinking of H.M.T. Bedfordshire off the North Carolina coast. Representatives from the British Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy will be in attendance, as well as members of the United States Coast Guard, family of the deceased sailors, and seniors from Ocracoke School among others. All are welcome to attend the ceremony, and the luncheon to follow at Ocracoke Community Center.
8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host Martin Garrish and Friends "Playing Your Ocracoke Memories" every Friday night through November. Beloved island native Martin Garrish shares songs – "sign posts of life" – and enchanting stories about growing up on Ocracoke. $15 for adults/$7 for kids under 12. More info at www.coyotemusic.net
Saturday, May 13th:
6:30pm: Live music! Martin & Friends at Ocracoke Oyster Company, 6:30–9:30pm.
7pm: Tom Cunningham will present a special "Ocracoke and the Battle of the Atlantic: 1939–1945" at 7pm @ Ocracoke Library. Tom Cunningham is the son of Sub-Lt. Thomas Cunningham, one of the four crewmen of the H.M.T. Bedfordshire who are buried in Ocracoke’s British Cemetery. Tom is a retired Royal Navy Reserve Commander, and is visiting Ocracoke to take part in the annual British Cemetery Ceremony on Friday, May 12th at 11am.Sunday, May 14th:
11am–3pm: Fish fry fundraiser and bake sale for Iris McClain and family @ Native Seafood. Iris is an honor roll 6th grader at Ocracoke School who had completely successful brain surgery at Duke in January to remove an arteriovenous malformation (an AVM). Please join the celebration of Iris's courage and contribute to the incredible support that Iris and her family received from the Ocracoke Community. All proceeds go to the McClain family.
Looking ahead....
May 21st: Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser @ Jason's Restaurant. All proceeds will benefit Teresa and Albert O'Neal as she undergoes treatment for ovarian cancer.
May 27th: 12th Annual Firemen's Ball. Pig-pickin', Silent Auction, Live Auction, and Dance with the Dune Dogs and Ocracoke Rockers!
May 31st: Art Opening @ Down Creek Gallery for Ocracoke Current's own Crystal Canterbury. Come out and see new photographs by our favorite photographer! 5–8pm, with refreshment!
