Obituary for Foy Shaw

He was born on September 19, 1936 to Foy J. Shaw, Jr. and Nola T. Thompson Shaw in Durham, NC. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and then earned his Master’s Degree in Sociology from Radford University. Foy taught for many years at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach where he met his longtime friend and partner Larry P. Williams.

They went to Ocracoke in 1979 to purchase the Island Inn and then moved there to operate it. They spent many years there together. Foy was also a prominent actor in the Little Theater in Norfolk and continued his acting in the Little Theater in Ocracoke. Foy’s love for theater led to many trips to New York City so he could see his actor and actress friends in their plays.

Left to cherish his memory are his nephew Charlie Reaves and niece Melanie Reaves, and numerous friends. 

Foy was preceded in death by his parents, partner, and sister Sandra Shaw Reaves.

Memorials in Foy’s name may be made to Ocracoke United Methodist Church.
