Current Events Week of Oct. 24th-31st
Even without the Pirate Jamboree, Ocracoke will entertain you this week!
Monday, October 24th:
3:00pm: Home Varsity Volleyball match! In the Dolphin Tank (a.k.a. Ocracoke School gym). Fear the Pod!
4:00pm Home Soccer game! (And Senior Night for the soccer Dolphins!) At the Ocracoke Community Park. Go Dolphins!
7:00pm: Candidates Night! Come out and meet your candidates before you cast your vote! At the Ocracoke Community Ceter, and sponsored by Ocracoke Civic and Business Association.
Tuesday, October 25th:
8:00am: FEMA is here! FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistants will be registering individuals for Individual Assistance (IA) at the Ocracoke Community Center, 8am–5pm.
Wednesday, October 26th:
8:00am: FEMA is here! FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistants will be registering individuals for Individual Assistance (IA) at the Ocracoke Community Center, 8am–11am.
5:00pm: Expose Yourself to Art! Down Creek Gallery will showcase new work by local photographer Melinda Fodrie Sutton in a reception, 5–8pm. There'll be refreshments and live music by Raygun Ruby. Melinda's latest photographic series features structures and buildings. “Structures are a new area for me, and most will be black and white imagery,” she says. Island visitors and residents are encouraged to attend the last opening for the season at Down Creek Gallery.
Melinda's art show was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew. The three weeks since then have given her time to combine her love of photography with her love of weaving. Come check out her new and creative work!
Thursday, October 27th:
7:00pm: OVFD meeting at the Fire Hall. Our OVFD firefighters rock! And you can be one of them – they are always in need of more help. They meet every other Thursday at 7pm. Come out to be a part of this vital organization.
Friday, October 28th:
3:30pm: Ocracoke School PTA Halloween Carnival! All are welcome to the Halloween Carnival on Friday afternoon/evening, which is a fun family-friendly event including a kids’ costume parade, carnival games, food sales, and Quiz-O.
After the Carnival's Costume Parade: While you're waiting for the Carnival games to begin, ead on down to the Magic Bean Coffee Bazaar for a Kids' Candy Scavenger Hunt!
3:00pm: Firkin Tapping @ Zillie's Island Pantry! Kick off your weekend's festivities on Friday with the Firkin (old-fashioned beer barrel) tapping!
Spook Walk! At the Magic Bean Coffee Bazaar (details TBA)
Saturday, October 29th:
3:00pm: The winning ticket of this year's Ocracoke Youth Center Golf Cart Raffle will be picked at 5pm in the Community Square! It's not too late to get a ticket -- get one at the Post Office, the Variety Store, Island Golf Carts -- and they'll be selling them at Smac's starting at 1pm on Saturday!
4:00pm Rumgagger Nautical Nonsense aboard the Wilma Lee! Join Capt. Rob and Fiddler Dave for nautical and piratical tales, jokes, and good times! Arrgh! The Skipjack Wilma Lee is located at the Community Store Docks.
4:00pm: Chicken Dinner and Bake Sale Fundraiser! Help the 4th and 5th graders earn money for their spring trip to the NC mountains!
4:00pm: Trick or Treat at the Community Square! On Saturday afternoon, 4-6pm, the Community Square will welcome little beggars for a special Trick-or-Treat around the Square shops. The regular village trick-or-treat will be on Monday, October 31st, but all are welcome to stop by this special weekend event.
7:00pm: Live music! Martin and Friends @ Ocracoke Oyster Company, starting at 7pm.
8:00pm: Live Music and Halloween party with Raygun Ruby! Everyone’s favorite 80’s cover band, Raygun Ruby, will play at the annual Howard’s Pub costume party! Be there or be square!
9:00pm: Live Music and Halloween Party @ Gaffer's! Capt. Jackie and the All-Stars will play the annual Halloween party – this year's theme is Famous Horror Movie Monsters! Get your creative on!
Sunday, October 30th:
8:00pm: All Alone and Lonely: An Evening of Haunting Appalachian Folklore @ the Coyote Music Den: "I feel I've dreamt this once before. But it wasn't you..." Lady Margret is waiting at the Coyote Music Den this Halloween for her true love to return from a long sea voyage. Wait with her under the candlelight and listen as she passes the time by singing tales from beyond the grave in Appalachian folk tradition. This single act, musical play features stories of love lost, love found, restless spirits, deception, murder, and one incredibly roguish werefox. Admission $10.
Monday, October 31st:
Today's the day when the island kids roam the streets (mostly the Lighthouse Loop) for Trick-or-Treating!
