Meowy Thanks from OcraCats
The September 2016 Spay/Neuter clinic provided 17 male and 16 female cats with neuters and rabies vaccinations. Howard Johnson, DVM and his vet tech, Joanna Burkett worked with our volunteers to run the clinic and also brought many much needed supplies that he donated to Ocracats. We now have a community volunteer who will be our first medical responder for cat emergencies or emerging medical conditions within the colonies. She provided Dr. Johnson with a wish list that he was able to fulfill and bring with him to support the colonies.
Hurricane Matthew produced the worst flooding the island has seen in a long time. It is thought that the high water mark from the historic ’44 storm was less than Matthew. The Village Craftsmen has recorded high water marks for many storms and noted that Hurricane Alex that flooded many cars and was considered to have the highest flood line was beat by 4 ½ inches by Matthew. All the colonies did well with the event, and our caretakers report almost all of the kitties are safe and healthy.
During the past season, many Ocracat supporters on vacation at Ocracoke brought bags of catfood and cases of canned food for the colonies. Others have shipped food to us through amazon or chewy.com. We SO appreciate those efforts, many do not realize how costly it is to feed the colonies daily and the efforts it takes our volunteers to keep the water fresh, food available and count heads. During the winter our food bills reach $1000 per month when we have no visitors on the island helping us. Also, those who have chosen OcraCats as their charity on Amazon Smile are continually adding money to our account with every purchase from Amazon. It adds up and makes a big difference!
So thanks from all of us on the island! You are purrfect friends!
