Fig Festival Week is here!

Ocracoke eateries will be offering Fig dishes both savory and sweet all this week! Stop by and check them out!

Current Events of the Week

The Ocracoke Friends of the Library Used Book Sale is still going on! Stop by during the regular library hours: Weekdays 3–7pm, Saturdays 9am-1pm.

The National Park Service hosts interpretive programs on Ocracoke every week. Find that schedule hereWonderful NPS volunteers and rangers open the Lighthouse a couple of times a week. (You can go in, but not up!) Stop by the NPS Visitor Center for specific times or check the Current's Facebook page.

Monday, August 8th: 

1pm: Public Meeting with the Ferry Division. All are welcome. Come with questions and concerns. Ferry division staff will talk about how new legislation affects the ferries and about the passenger-only ferries. 1pm at the Ocracoke Community Center. 

1pm: Mondays at the OPS Museum means a Museum Tour at 1pm with an island resident with insider knowledge. Today, it's Bill Jones!

5:30-9pm: Concert in the Park! Celebrate the National Park Service Centennial with a gathering and concert at the NPS docks. The fun starts at 5:30pm, when a ranger will be available to answer your questions about Ocracoke and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. From 7–9pm, enjoy live music from Ocracoke's own Madame Presidents. More info here.

7:30pm: Pirate Show at Deepwater Theater! Join Desiree Ricker, David Tweedie, Gary Mitchell, and Peyton Piquard for a fun, family-friendly analysis of the infamous character Blackbeard the Pirate. 7:30pm; doors open at 7. Read more about "Blackbeard: A Historical, Hysterical Account" here.

Tuesday, August 9th:

1pm: Porch Talk at the OPS Museum. "Shipwrecks and Rescues" with Philip Howard. Porch Talks are free, informal, and informative! 

6pm: "Burning Woman: The End of Art" bonfire at the Lifeguard Beach! The culminating event of Kitty Mitchell's online and silent auction for her artwork. All of the paintings that didn't get bid on will go up in flames! Read more here

8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host "Coyote Plus One" at 8pm every Tuesday night. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

Current Events of the Week

Wednesday, August 10th:

9am - 1pm: Makers Market on Silver Lake at the Wahab House Lawn, next to the Anchorage Inn. Visitors can enjoy shopping with local and regional vendors, showcasing their products that include: herb markers, large coffee mugs, ceramic serving spoons, and whimsical catbird sculptures, jewelry designed with porcelain made from china, homemade soap, jams, sweaters, local honey and wooden furniture and wall art. This is a free event. Biking or walking is suggested as there is limited parking. Parking is available at the NPS parking lot.

10am: Outdoor Classroom summer programs are offered every Wednesday at 10am. All programs are free, last approximately 90 minutes, are outdoors, and taught by Elizabeth Hanrahan, a certified wildlife educator. This week, you can learn about estuaries at the Outdoor Classroom at NCCAT.

10am: Dockside Talk aboard the Skipjack Wilma Lee at the Community Store docks. Dockside Talks are free and sponsored by Ocracoke Alive. On Wednesdays, Capt. Rob and Fiddlin' Dave present Pirate Tales and Fiddle Tunes. This program is especially fun for families.

1pm: Just for Kids program at OPS at 1pm. This week, make a shell snow globe! All are welcome! A $5 donation for materials is appreciated.

7pm: OCBA Meeting at the Community Center. All are welcome!

8pm: Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host "Coyote" (just Marcy and Lou!) at 8pm every Wednesday night. More info at www.coyotemusic.net

8pm: The weekly Ocrafolk Opry is tonight! Live music and storytelling by a variety of local talent. Shows begin at 8pm at Deepwater Theater. More info here.

9pm: You can sing, too! Karaoke starts at 9pm at Ocracoke Oyster Company.

Thursday, August 11th:

10am: Dockside Talk aboard the Skipjack Wilma Lee at the Community Store docks. Dockside Talks are free and sponsored by Ocracoke Alive. On Thursdays, Ocracoke Alive board member Tom Pahl will talk about the Story of the Wilma Lee.

1pm: Porch Talk at the OPS Museum: "Life on Ocracoke" with assorted island residents. Porch Talks are free, informal, and informative!

3pm: Live Music! Martin & Lou at the Ocracoke Oyster Company, 3–6pm. Great tunes in the afternoon! 

6pm: Wine tasting at Zillie's Island Pantry! Summer wine tastings take place every Thursday and Friday at 6pm, and pair five great wines with delicious hors d'oeuvres from the pantry. Space is limited, so make a reservation, and sign up at zillies.com.

8pm: Live Music! Molasses Creek in concert every Thursday at 8pm at Deepwater Theater. Doors open at 7:30pm. Reserve your tickets online at molassescreek.com

5pm: Pick-up softball at Ocracoke Community Park, $2 per player helps support the ballfield!

7pm: Martin and Friends play every Sunday night at Ocracoke Oyster Co, starting at 7pm.
