Burning Calories!
Did I ever have this much energy? I don’t think so! Around 30 Ocracoke kids gathered together on Tuesday to participate in the Summer Reading Program Field Day. Unfortunately, since there was thunder and lightning, we moved indoors to the school gym. No one was going to get struck by lightning if I could help it!
Ms. Allison Mitchell and her lovely mother were here from BHM Headquarters in Washington (little Washington that is) having spent a few days here on our lovely island. Allison is the Youth Services Coordinator for Beaufort-Hyde-Martin County Libraries. She came with her car loaded full of props and activities for the kids to use.
For the first 20 minutes or so, we danced! Boy did we dance! We did the Hokey Pokey, Cupid Shuffle, Chicken Dance, Cha Cha Slide and even Whipped/Nae Nae'd! If this sounds like a foreign language to you, ask a young person to explain it and perhaps demonstrate.
The field day events were next. We did a three-legged race, hula hoops, and jump ropes and sack races. The sack races were so popular that we did a huge relay at the end with all the kids divided into four teams. Ocracoke kids sure can HOP! Allison encouraged the children to cheer on their teammates. It was so nice to hear them motivate each other to the finish line.
After all this hard work, the kids deserved a treat, so popsicles for everyone! They also received a temporary tattoo for tossing their trash.
It was a fun time had by all for sure!
Thanks to the children, supervisors and a special thanks to Allison and her mom for coming so far to hang out with us.
The next Summer Reading activity will be on Wednesday July 27 at 11 am when we welcome Ms. Paris from the NC Aquarium at Roanoke Island. This is an all age program and everyone is invited! Bring a friend!
