Colin Comes Callin'

Press Release
Colin Comes Callin'
Ocracoke residents and visitors are asked to closely monitor Tropical Storm Colin.

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service shows Tropical Storm Colin tracking slightly closer to Ocracoke, Hyde County.

Colin is an unorganized storm and significant uncertainties remain in its exact track and thus the local impacts. There have been only minor changes. A tropical storm warning is now in effect on the coastal waters south of Oregon Inlet, but no watch or warning has been issued for the land at this time.

The Hyde County Emergency Service Department issued the following statement:

Ocracoke Island visitors should strongly consider the projected impacts from Tropical Storm Colin when deciding whether to remain on the island or preparing to depart for their stay this week. Ocracoke and OBX Dare County are forecast to receive heavy rainfall starting this evening which may result in transportation delays or impassable roads. Additionally, the current forecast track places Ocracoke within the tropical storm force wind field for approximately four (4) hours, starting at around 12:00 PM tomorrow. Standing water and tropical storm force winds could impact ferry operations tomorrow. Due to the forward speed of the system, there is little to no chance of issuing and implementing emergency protective measures before conditions deteriorate this evening into tomorrow. Please consider these factors, closely monitor the forecast, and exercise sound judgement while making your travel plans.

NCDOT update: On June 6, 2016, NCDOT NC 12 posted this to their Facebook page:

The N.C. Department of Transportation is working closely with local officials and emergency management personnel to monitor the path and effects of Tropical Storm Colin. Motorists using roadways on the Outer Banks, especially those on N.C. 12 South from the Bonner Bridge to Ocracoke, could see the biggest impacts from the system, particularly as storm conditions occur overnight Monday into tomorrow.

While no surf over wash is expected at this point, recent heavy rains have already created saturated soil conditions area wide, and any additional significant rainfall could cause flooding. NCDOT urges drivers in the area to monitor weather reports before planning any trips, and to use special caution in areas that are known to be prone to flooding.
