Current Events Week of May 16th
Monday, May 16th:
A wonderful NPS volunteer will open the Lighthouse on Mondays from 1–3pm. You can go in, but not up!
Tuesday, May 17th:
The Hyde County Chamber of Commerce Spring Luncheon is at 11am in the Ocracoke Community Center. The guest speaker is Brownie Futrell. RSVP at 252-926-9171 or hydecocc@embarqmail.com; the lunch is $12.50 and it's catered by Darlene Styron.
Open Jam at Coyote Music Den, 7–9pm at Marcy and Lou's place in the Community Square. All are welcome to play, sing, or listen.
Wednesday, May 18th:
Hyde County Re-Entry Permits issued at the Community Center, 1–4pm. If you renewed your permit in 2014 or 2015, it is valid until January 1, 2019. To make the process even easier, people with existing permits only need to apply for a new 2014-2018 expiration date sticker for their permit. Those applying for the first time will need to complete the full application and supply all necessary documents. More info here.
Trivia Night! Jessica is Back for ONE NIGHT ONLY for Pub Trivia at Ocracoke Oyster Company beginning at 7pm. It's $5 per person to play (individuals or teams) and the money supports the Ocracoke School Academic Banquet. Test your wits against Ocracoke's finest minds!
Thursday, May 19th:
Scholastic Book Fair begins today! Stop by the Ocracoke Library anytime between 8am and 7pm. Buy some great books for summer reading. Don't have a kid to buy books for? You can purchase books for Ocracoke School classrooms or for the library's collection.
Sorella's is the new girl in town! The former Ocracoke Pizza Company has been transformed into a sit-down Italian restaurant. Opening today for the season, every day, 5–9pm.

Friday, May 20th:
Scholastic Book Fair! Stop by the Ocracoke Library anytime between 8am and 7pm. Buy some great books for summer reading. This is an important fundraiser for the school library program.
Play Ball! Another fundraiser game starts at 5pm. More Cops and Coaches vs. Guerreros Aztecas! Mexican food, other concessions and a bat raffle, too! Proceeds benefit the Community Park. Admissions is $5.
Music at the Coyote Den! The Coyote Den is in the Community Square, and will host Martin Garrish and Friends "Playing Your Ocracoke Memories" every Friday night from March 25th – November 18th. More info at www.coyotemusic.net
Saturday, May 21st:

Hands Across the Sand! Hands Across The Sand is coming to Ocracoke on May 21st. Join together this spring and say NO to offshore oil drilling and YES to clean energy and reweables. Start gathering at 11 am at AIRPORT BEACH. There is parking at the airport parking lot, or you can carpool to the beach. Some of those with 4x4 will be there early to help shuttle people onto the beach if necessary. At NOON, everyone will join hands and stand in unity to say NO DRILL!! Come one, come all! Everyone is invited to help protect our beaches!! (Read all about last year's event here.)
Play Ball! Ocracoke's own Little Leaguers, host home games! Watch the Blue Claws (1pm) and the Raptors (3pm) at Ocracoke Community Park (the Field of Dreams!) The concessions are great, too, so come out for lunch!
Sunday, May 22nd:
Graduation Sunday at OUMC: The Methodist Church will honor the Class of 2016 at this week's service, followed by a community potluck in the Church Rec Hall. All are welcome!
Ocracoke Community Park is the place to be on Sunday afternoons. Come on out to join in Pick-Up Softball at 5pm. Fun and games!
Starting tonight the Flying Melon Restaurant will be open on Sundays, 5–9pm. From now until Labor Day, they'll be open Tuesday–Sunday, 5–9pm. Bon appétit!
