Current Events Week of March 14th

Marching into Spring with a parade and more!

Monday, March 14th:

Happy Pi Day! Why not celebrate the middle of March with some pie?

Tuesday, March 15th:

Primary Election Day! Exercise your right to VOTE! (If you didn't do it already during early voting.) Ocracoke residents vote at the Fire Hall; polls are open from 6:30am–7:30pm. See sample ballots for Dems, Repub, and Libs here.

After you cast your ballot, take yourself to grab an ice cream cone -- the Slushy Stand open for the season today!

If you need even more dessert, come to the Ocracoke Preservation Society's spring membership meeting at 7pm at Deepwater Theater. It's a dessert potluck! The guest speaker is Heidi Smith of Tideland EMC, who will talk about the history of electric power on Ocracoke and the new changes that are coming. All are welcome!

Wednesday, March 16th:

Happy Old Quork's Day! This is a holiday just for Ocracoke! Find out more here.

Dajio Restaurant and Jason's Restaurant both open for the season today!

Thursday, March 17th:

Celebrate the Luck o' the Irish!

If you are on Ocracoke Island this year for Saint Patrick’s Day, join in the parade!

The parade will begin at the Ocracoke Station (the gas station) at 1pm and will proceed to the O’Bar (Ocracoke Bar and Grille, just down Hwy 12). There will be a single $550 cash prize for the best float, group or whimsical idea participating in the parade! A list of the parade rules can be found at Ocracoke Station. While the registration deadline is March 15th, last-minute entrants can bring their signed forms the day of the parade.

The OPS Museum opens for the season today! Spring hours are Monday-Friday, 10am–4pm, and Saturday 10am– 3pm.

Coloring Night at Books to Be Red! Wear green and come out to color your stress away! 6–8pm. Books to Be Red provides coloring pages, crayons and markers, and refreshments, and it's FREE!

The Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department will hold their every-other-Thursday meeting at the Fire Hall at 7pm. They can always use new members! You can also stop by and get a way-cool OVFD t-shirt or order your reflective house number signs (so OVFD and Ocracoke EMS can find you!)

And.... the Steel Drum Workshop begins today! Scott Paulson of Island Time Steel Drums will offer a 5-session class in Deepwater Theater for ages 13-99. Celebrate the rites of spring and learn to play these beautiful instruments. More info here

Friday, March 18th:

Howard's Pub opens for the season today!

The North Carolina Shell Club holds their annual meeting on Ocracoke every year. (They come to get our scotch bonnets!) All are welcome to join them, Friday and Saturday nights at 7pm. They will have a guest speaker and a silent auction each night (for shells!).

Saturday, March 19th:

This is the last official day of winter. I hope it is a nice beach day. Winter beach days are my favorite. Who else thinks this winter went by too fast?

Youth Basketball Tournament: Games start at 8am with Pre-K/Kindergarden, 1st-3rd grades at 9:15, and 4th-6th grades at 10:30. Championship games are at 11:45 and 1:00. Come out see our future Dolphin basketball stars in action!

During the Youth Basketball Tournament the 5th grade class will be having a Mexican Food and Bake Sale Fundraiser at 10am to raise money for their class trip. Please come out and watch some amazing kids play ball and grab something to eat. Plates include 1 tostada, 1 tamale, 2 taquitos and a drink for $10.00. Don't forget to satisfy your sweet tooth with a fresh baked treat!! The class is also sponsoring a 50/50 Raffle with tickets available at the tournament.

Ocracoke Oyster Company opens today for the season!

Sunday, March 20th:

Happy First Day of Spring! It's the Vernal Equinox, which will happen precisely at 12:30am in Ocracoke's time zone. On the equinoxes the Sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal – but not quite. The March equinox marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator – from south to north and vice versa in September.

Looking ahead....

Next week brings us the WOVV annual meeting, the Ocracoke School Science Fair, and three more restaurant openings! (Flying Melon, Thai Moon, and Coffee Co.!) Easter weekend brings an Easter Egg Hunt, the Ocracoke Child Care Clam Chowder Cook-Off fundraiser, and a sunrise Easter service at the beach.

Check out the Ocracoke Current calendar for more events and information!
