Spring days ahead. Wish you were here!

Monday, March 7th:

It's Fiesta time! Eduardo's Taco Stand opens for the season! (The two weeks without him while he was on vacation was miserable!)

The Hyde County Board of Commissioners meeting will take place at 6pm. You can participate by teleconference in the Ocracoke School commons area. Agenda and information here

Tuesday, March 8th:

The Ocracoke School 4th grade class heads off for their epic field trip to New Bern, Durham, Raleigh, and Colonial Williamsburg! The kids (and the peeps who love them) worked really hard at several different fundraisers this year to pay for their trip. The most recent was a 50/50 raffle, which ended last Friday. Star Dolphin of the week Christian Stevens got to stir the bucket, and birthday girl Alyssa Bryan dug deep for the winning ticket. Congrats to Nancy Gaskins, who took home $1264.00!

Wednesday, March 9th:

Color Your Stress Away! All are welcome to Books to Be Red, 6–8pm, for a Coloring Party! They'll supply the pencils and markers, coloring pages, and refreshments! Just bring yourself! Fun for all ages!

All are welcome to the March meeting of Ocracoke Civic and Business Association at 7pm at the Community Center. There wasn't a quorum for the February meeting; read the minutes from January here.

Thursday, March 10th:

The Ocracoke Planning Advisory Board meets at 5:30pm at the Community Center.

Saturday, March 12th:

Current Events Week of March 7th

Salsa Cheese Eggs, here I come! The Pony Island restaurant opens for the season, serving breakfast starting at 7am.

At 7:30pm at Deepwater Theater, NC writer Bland Simpson will be sharing music and stories from his new book, Little Rivers. Bland is a Kenan Distinguished Professor at UNC and a musician with the famed NC music group the Red Clay Ramblers. Bland will regale us with new tales of coastal North Carolina’s “water-loving land,” revealing how its creeks, streams, and rivers shape the region’s geography as well as its culture. Drawing on deep family ties and coastal travels, Simpson and wife and collaborator Ann Cary Simpson tell the stories of those who have lived and worked in this country, chronicling both a distinct environment and way of life. Whether rhapsodizing about learning to sail on the Pasquotank River or eating oysters on Ocracoke, he introduces readers to the people and communities along the watery web of myriad “little rivers” that define North Carolina’s sound country as it meets the Atlantic. The event is sponsored by Ocracoke Friends of the Library and Ocracoke Alive. Admission is a suggested donation of $5-10/person to help support the Ocracoke Working Watermen’s Exhibit located on the docks at the Community Square.

Sunday, March 13th:

Spring forward! Daylight Savings Time is here at last! Set your clocks ahead one hour, and enjoy the sunshine.

At 2pm, Bland Simpson will be signing books at Books to Be Red. All are welcome!

Looking ahead...
