Current Events Week of August 10 – 16
Monday, August 10th:
The NCDOT ferry division management will be on the annual for the monthly public meeting at 1pm in the Community Center. There will also be a ferry division meeting on August 31st to discuss the possibility of passenger ferries.
Ocracoke United Methodist Church will hold its annual Vacation Bible School August 10 – 13th from 6 – 7:30pm. All kids are welcome! Sign up here. This year's theme is Living Waters for the World.
A Tale of Blackbeard! takes the stage again this week at 8pm in the Ocracoke School gym. Singing, dancing, and swordfighting pirates woo talented village girls on the eve of Blackbeard's final battle at Ocracoke! If you saw it last year, you need to see it again – there's a new Blackbeard, new pirates and village girls, and even a new song! And... there's much more space in the new setting in the gym! Tuesday, August 11th:
Coyote Plus One howls again! This week Marcy and Lou will welcome Aaron Caswell to join them on stage for some well-crafted spontaneity! The show starts at 8pm at the Community Center, and admission is $15 (free for kids under 12.) Not on Ocracoke? The live show will be broadcast on the web at concertwindow.com/coyote (cost = $1). Wednesday, August 12th:
Expose Yourself to Art at Down Creek Gallery! All are welcome to the art opening, 5 – 8pm, with live music by Rob King and refreshments, too!
Kitty Mitchell will show her newest collection of paintings Wednesday, August 12th from 5pm-8pm. Mitchell earned a Bachelor's degree in studio arts at the University of Pittsburgh, and has since continued her painting for both public and private showings. As Ocracoke School's art teacher, Kitty has enjoyed watching young artists bloom for the past 25 years. She feels that teaching has given her a chance to “stay in touch with the creative playfulness of children,” while she incorporates some of their fearlessness into her own work experimenting with paint and imagery. Mitchell’s theme for her show at Down Creek Gallery this August, is titled “What Do you Love?”
Mitchell says that her show is based upon the ideals that; “Passion comes from love, love comes from gratitude, and life becomes dull when you are not conscious of the gifts you have been given. Artists play, and attempt to make the viewer aware of gifts, terrors, and ennui. I’m focusing on the things I happen to love for this series.”
Color-Con Coloring Party at Books to Be Red! Stop by between 6:30 – 8:30pm to experience the soothing sensation of coloring for grown-ups. It's trendy, it's cool, and it's right here on Ocracoke. Refreshments, too!
Ocracoke Civic and Business Association will hold their monthly meeting at 7pm at the Community Center. All are welcome -- come and find out what's going on! Read the minutes from last month here.
The Ocrafolk Opry is back for its 15th season at Deepwater Theater. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for youngens. Show starts at 8pm; doors open at 7:30pm. Performers this week include, but are not limited to, Molasses Creek, Rob Temple, Philip Howard, and yours truly.
Thursday, August 13th:
The Ocracoke Planning Board meets at 5:30pm at the Community Center. Be informed!
Come out to see and hear Molasses Creek in concert at Deepwater Theater! The show starts at 8pm (doors open at 7:30); admission is $15 adults/$7 kids.
