Current Events Week of 3/16/15

Signs of spring!
Signs of spring!

The week started late at the Current offices.

We had technical difficulties with the internet, and couldn't post new stories until Wednesday afternoon. Our apologies if you missed any of the fun stuff going on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. (Library knitting club, Community Center board meeting, St. Patrick's Day, Library Book Club, pre-school storytime, and the OCBA meeting! Not to mention the first Ocracoke high school baseball game of the season!)

But let's start with Thursday, March 19th:

The Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department will hold their every-other-Thursday meeting at the Fire Hall at 7pm. They can always use new members! You can also stop by and get a way-cool OVFD t-shirt or order your reflective house number signs (so OVFD and Ocracoke EMS can find you!)

Friday, March 20th:

Celebrate the First Day of Spring! We've been waiting a looooong time. It's a time to celebrate, even if we can't see the Total Eclipse of the Heart, I mean Sun. (I just got that song stuck in my head. If you did, too, you're welcome.)

Howard's Pub opens for the season! Eat, drink, and be merry!

Saturday, March 21st:

Volunteer Workday at Ocracoke Community Park, 8am. All hands are needed to put the finishing touches on the Field of Dreams, which will host the first-ever Ocracoke home baseball game next week! Pitch to help!

Pinewood Derby, 1pm in the school gym. It's always a good time to see the Cub Scouts in action.

Pastel Workshop with visiting artist Dan Curry. Dan will hold a plein aire (outside) pastel workshop on the 21st (rain date: March 22nd) from 1 – 3pm. For more information, contact Dan at 570-637-5028.

Sunday, March 22nd:

Pick up your Krispy Kreme Doughnuts at 3pm in the school commons area. If you ordered some doughnuts to support the 4th graders, come and get 'em!

Looking ahead:

Author to visit Ocracoke! Charlie Lovett, a North Carolina native and author of The Bookman's Tale, will be on the island for the Ocracoke Friends of the Library Annual Membership Meeting on March 24th at 7pm at the library. Everyone is welcome! There'll be refreshments, too!

Mark your calendars: Ocracoke Child Care is holding a big fundraiser on Saturday, April 4th at the Community Center. It’s a Clam Chowder Cook-Off and everyone can join in the fun! Enter your clam chowder in the traditional (Ocracoke recipe) or non-traditional category, or just come out to taste the entries. Don’t like clams? There’ll be hot dogs and baked goods, too. Music and performances by community members and OCC children will make the Cook-Off a fun and family-friendly event. Check out OCC's new website for registration information!

Later that evening, come out to the Community Center for a Dance with the Ocracoke Rockers! Teresa and Albert will be working the door, shaking you down for donations as you go into shake a leg. There’ll be beer, too – for a donation, of course.

Remember to check this page and/or the Ocracoke Current calendar for updates and additions to Current Events!
