Senior Night for Ocracoke School Athletes
The Varsity boys are on a three game winning streak going into tonight's match against Plymouth.
The players received a standing ovation from the full bleachers for their 54-40 victory over Creswell on Tuesday, giving them an overall record of 7 wins and 13 losses.
Adam Carter was unstoppable in the first half, scoring seemingly at will with pull up jumpers from both sides of the court and taking it coast to coast for lay-ups. He showed his range with three point shots, threw himself on loose balls, plagued the opponents with aggressive defense, and was the clear choice for Player of the Game.
"Adam's been having a great season," said Coach David Allewalt. He added 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals to his 25 points.
"What have you been feeding him?" Ocracoke Current asked his proud father, Brian Carter.
"He eats everything in the house," said a smiling Brian.
Adam was one of six student athletes honored, with their families, at center court during the break between the girls' and boys' games. He was recognized earlier this year for being the first ever four year runner on Ocracoke School's cross country team. He plans to study law enforcement at Cape Fear Community College in the fall.
Andrew Tillett is deciding which university he will attend. Andrew has scored over 1000 points during his four years as an Ocracoke Dolphin, and during Monday's game he pulled down his 1000th rebound. His favorite memory is beating Hatteras four times during his junior year.
Defensive specialist Kade Nagakane has grown into a threat on both sides on the court. He is graduating a year early, and will continue to make innovative fashion choices and do great things with his facial hair.
Wyatt Norris fondly remembers winning playoff games to advance to the Tideland Conference championship last year. He is thinking about moving to Seattle after graduation, and why not?
Alin Villanueva Tellez never missed a game during her four years as an Ocracoke Dolphin. Her coaches admire her steady play and quiet confidence, while her teammates said they appreciate that she never gets nervous, intimidated or discouraged on the court. Alin is interested in studying business.
Point guard Alma Flores is a consistent and determined leader, said her coaches. She helped lead the team to over 50 victories during her four years as a varsity player.
Alma, Alin and Andrew are also consistently found on the academic honor rolls.
The strong Dolphin girls cruised to a 79 - 16 victory over Creswell on Tuesday, bringing their season record to 13 wins and 7 losses and their conference record to 8 - 4. Stats for all Dolphin teams can be found at maxpreps.com.
The Lady Dolphins will need to break the Plymouth press to stay competitive in tonight's home game, said Coach Adam Burleson.
