The Backin’ to the ‘50’s Band, featuring Martin Garrish and John Golden, will provide the live music as they celebrate the release of their second ‘50’s tribute album.
Martin and John started thinking about a ‘50’s music project about three years ago. In 2009, they started recording, but soon realized that one CD couldn’t hold all the songs they loved.
“We started out talking about our favorite ‘50’s music and came up with a list of twenty-five to thirty songs we liked,” John said. “Since then, we’ve thought of at least twenty more.”
Last year, John mentioned to Gary Mitchell that he’d like to put on a 50’s event, and Gary got Merle Davis and Susan Dodd involved. They formed a committee, along with Kati Wharton, Reggie Mosser, Genevieve Sansone, for promoting the dance, decorating the Community Center, and organizing the food and drink. The swingin’ Sock Hop was fun for all, and raised $250 for Ocracoke Child Care.
John was happy that so many of the island’s younger people came out. There were kids on the dance floor (like mine) whose parents (or, in their case, at least one parent) weren’t even born in the ‘50’s. But the music is just as infectious today as ever, and the high schoolers who shagged, shimmied, and shook last year had a blast. The Sock Hop organizers have made the party free for kids under 18 this year to encourage even more teeny-bopper participation.
So, come on out kids, and see if you can keep up with the oldies but goodies!
