A two story fire house was built and dedicated through the efforts of native son, R. Stanley Wahab, Sr. This building hosted many community activities (dances, wedding receptions, baby showers, BINGO and much more) until the school gym was built in the '80s.

Fire hydrants came to the village in the early 7Os when the water system was put into service.

Through the course of the years between the old building and the new there have been numerous fund raising events like fish fries, BINGO and most recently the Fireman's Ball on Memorial Day weekend to maintain the equipment and help pay for the new building.

As the years passed, it became obvious that the building on Back Rd. simply was not large enough to hold the growing needs of the fire department. In 2009 the Fire Dept was notified that a family on the island wanted to donate a piece of land to build a new building on highway 12. So in 2014 a builder was chosen and as they say the rest is history.

Thanks to the continued generosity of the community, friends of the fire department, the Ocracoke Occupancy Tax Board, and the Ocracoke Firemen’s Ball, the building loan was paid off in May 31, 2016.

Much like the "old" fire station the "new" one is hosting many community activities. It held it's BIGGEST job when it served as the hub for donations and volunteers during Hurricane Dorian as well.

Today the "old" fire station on the Back Road is the home to Ocracoke's WOVV radio station and the school shop class.
