The Outer Banks Community Foundation awarded $23,250 in scholarships to Ocracoke and Hatteras students this month, including three scholarships totaling $5,000 to two graduating seniors from Ocracoke.

Ocracoke senior Alma Flores won the $3,000 Greg and Eden Honeycutt Scholarship. Established in 2006, the Honeycutt Scholarship supports students from Ocracoke and Hatteras with exceptional volunteerism and extracurriculars who plan to attend an in-state public college or university. Ms. Flores plans to attend East Carolina University to become a neonatal nurse. She played varsity basketball throughout high school and has been a member of the Beta Club for four years. 

Hatteras senior Andrew Gray won the Hatteras Honeycutt Scholarship in the amount of $2,000. Mr. Gray is attending UNC Charlotte in the fall to study sports broadcasting. 

Ocracoke Island Realty and Village Realty awarded their first awards this year from their newly created scholarship fund, also managed by the Community Foundation. Scholarships of $1,000 each were presented to Ocracoke seniors Alma Flores and Amanda Gaskins. Ms. Gaskins will attend East Carolina University in the fall. She was captain of the varsity volleyball team, served in the BETA club the past four years, and is an active member of Ocracoke United Methodist church.

Other scholarship winners from Hatteras included Savannah Brown (Inez Daniels Austin Scholarship, Glenn and Pat Eure Scholarship, Outer Banks Association of Realtors Scholarship, Charles and Dorothy Luedemann Scholarship), Bailey Gray (Stewart Couch Memorial Scholarship, North Banks Rotary Scholarship, Outer Banks Association of Realtors Scholarship), and Andrea Wilson (Dorothy Scott Townsend Fletcher Memorial Scholarship).

So far this year, the Community Foundation has awarded $130,750 in scholarships to 58 students across Dare County, Currituck County, and Ocracoke, and over $1,300,000 in scholarships since the organization’s inception in 1984.
