The second annual Ocracoke Island Run begins at 8 am on April 27. Over 160 locals and visitors participated in the 2012 race and family fun run. With the addition of a 10K race and Miller Lite as a title sponsor, the event will bring even more early season visitors to Ocracoke.
The race course is certified and professionally timed. Runners are encouraged to sign up now. Registration fees increase from $32 to $37 for adults after April 13, and from $16 to $21 for youth. Fees pay for the T-shirts received by all who race, and trophies and medals for the victors. The post race party at Gaffer's Sports Pub begins at 11:30 a.m., and is free for runners.
Business sponsors have committed a touch under $21,000, said organizer Greg Honeycutt. The addition of Miller Lite as a title sponsor is a huge benefit, and they also help promote the run with their off island retailers, he said.
Ocracoke Coffee Co. also deserves special recognition. "They stepped up with a major sponsorship," said Honeycutt, and will be taking charge of hosting the 1 mile fun run on South Point road and growing that event.
The event equally benefits two island non-profits, the Ocracoke School Athletic Boosters Club and WOVV 90.1 FM. 10% of profits will also be donated to the Community Recreation Park.
Registration numbers are encouraging so far, said Honeycutt, who noted that many locals waited until the last minute to register last year.
