Village Thrift, located at the back of the Ocracoke Coffee Shop building, is a major funding source for the Ocracoke Youth Center. Every dollar earned is returned directly to the community. Ocracoke Youth Center, Inc. was established as a nonprofit in 1995 to provide support and services to the youth and families of Ocracoke.
When Youth Center programming was placed on hiatus, all proceeds of sales from Village Thrift were set aside for future community needs.
Now that the Ocracoke Youth Center is back in full swing, revenue from Village Thrift will be a key component in the operation of the Ocracoke Community Park. The new park, comprised of over 5 acres, is being developed to support a baseball/softball field with future expansion to include a soccer field, other recreational space and a new facility for Youth Center and other community activities. The baseball field portion will be completed by the end of February 2013. The park property will be owned by the Ocracoke Youth Center and will be open to the public and will support recreational endeavors of the community, county and school system. The park project is being paid for through a combination of private fundraising, grants and public involvement via use agreements. Village Thrift sales will provide operating funds for reinstated youth programs as it has done in the past.
The shop is currently open Monday-Saturday, with hours for each day posted on the door. It is staffed by a fantastic crew of volunteers from the community, both full and part time residents. Please stop by to browse; volunteer if you can. And grab a coffee or a smoothie from our very generous Ocracoke Coffee Company neighbors, too.
