Tuesday, June 5th was the first night of OVFD Bingo for the 2012 season.
Teresa and Janey were in their places selling games, and three intrepid special-sellers/Bingo checkers (Trisha, Maddie, and Cindy) were ready to go.
The menfolk were back in the kitchen.
William was getting ready to call the games. The Bingo players were buying their cards, finding good seats and getting into the spirit. The scene was cheerful and chatty until the hush fell as the first number was called.
"B-15," William said. "B-15." All heads were bent to their games cards – Bingo had officially begun!
OVFD Bingo is a longtime tradition on Ocracoke. It offers family-friendly fun for a good cause. Every Tuesday night from now 'til August 21st, you'll find die-hard local fans, visitors who come back every year and can't imagine a vacation without it, and newbies who've never played the game. All of them are getting an evening's entertainment and a chance to win big bucks, while contributing much-needed money to our volunteer fire department.
Who doesn't love the volunteer fire department? These men and women are willing to run into a burning building to save your hide, and nobody pays them to do it!
OVFD members don't just fight fires; they are called out every time there's a life flight call and they respond to all car accidents. They maintain the building, trucks and equipment, go through hours and hours of rigorous training, and even occasionally fix the Bingo board.
OVFD is always in need of volunteers to help work the Bingo games. To help, please call Sundae at 921-0283.
To join OVFD, just show up at one of their every-other-Thursday night meetings (dates are listed on the Ocracoke Current calendar) and pitch in!
