Tonight is the Ocracoke Friends of the Library’s annual membership meeting. It starts at 7pm at the Library, and everyone is welcome! Following a brief business meeting in which president Scott Bradley will explain what the Friends of the Library have been doing for the school and library over the past year, the group will host two guest speakers.
Pat Garber is a local author who has written several books about Ocracoke, including Ocracoke Wild. Her most recent book is Heart Like a River. It is the story, based on his diary and letters, of her great-grandfather Sgt-Major Newsom E Jenkins and the years he spent fighting in the Civil War under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E Lee. She’ll talk about her research and what it means to her to be a "daughter" of the Confederacy.
Molly Lovejoy is a senior at Ocracoke School. She’s lived on Ocracoke all her life, expect for last year, when she was an exchange student. Molly will talk about her experiences living with a family in Linz, Austria, share a few of her many photos, and try to give everyone a feel for what it's like to eat apple strudel and wiener schnitzel for dinner, attend school taught entirely in German, and live in the Alps.
Come on out to the library to hear these stories and enjoy some Girl Scout cookies for dessert!
If you find yourself in mainland Hyde County on Thursday, be sure to stop by the Dolphins baseball game at Mattamuskeet School. It starts at 4:00 p.m. Go Fins!
On Friday, all are welcome to visit the annual Science Fair at Ocracoke School, sponsored by the Hyde County 4-H program. It’s open to the public from 2 –3p.m. in the school gym. Prepare to be impressed by the hard work, creativity, and scientific methodizing these students will demonstrate.
Saturday brings fun for the little ones when Magic Mike comes to town! He’s putting on a show at the Community Center beginning at 3p.m. A $5 donation to Ocracoke Child Care gets you in the door; there’ll also be a hot dog and bake sale after the show. Bring your favorite kid and come out to support OCC!
Also, this week, some friends in Utah will be having a fundraiser for Robyn Potter Monticone. She’s a former resident of Ocracoke, and so is her husband, Stephen. (His parents, Bill and Leslie Monticone, live on Ocracoke.) Last month, a drunk driver hit Robyn’s car head-on and she has a long road ahead to recover from her serious injuries. The Rally for Robyn fundraiser is accepting donations to help Robyn and Stephen with medical bills and extra childcare for baby Emmeline, who is 7 months old. Robyn’s former employer, Leslie Lanier at Books to Be Red, is having an island-based fundraiser for Robyn. For a $5 donation, Leslie will give you a handy re-usable shopping bag. Stop by Books to Be Red for a Chicobag and don’t forget to check out the great book selection, too!
And last, but not least, 8th grader Caroline Temple represented Ocracoke School in the Downeast Regional Spelling Bee last weekend. She placed 2nd out of the 40 kids who competed, and came home with some gift certificates and a big trophy! A sampling of her words are: marzipan, prosecute, luau, hafiz, pfeffernuss, lieutenant, diesel, and infinitesimal.
