Who says it's quiet here in the winter? With so much going on, here's our guide to what not to miss this week:

Auditions for the spring production of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” to be performed in early May. Come to the gym tonight at 7p.m. to read for a part, or to sign on as one of the many extras the play needs. This is a school and community theater project and director Charles Temple invites would-be actors age 14-114 to get involved.

And here’s today’s bit of trivia for you: Once the play is cast and rehearsals begin, those involved will thereafter refer to it as “The Scottish play” and refrain from speaking the name “Macbeth.” An age-old superstition warns that speaking the name (except on stage, directly quoting from the script) will bring disaster to the production.

Our players, of course, aren’t superstitious. But, as Emmet put it to me, they will follow the rule, because one, It’s tradition and traditions are fun, and two, there’s no need to be a fool about it. The witches cast a lot of curses, and you wouldn’t want one to go astray.

On Tuesday, head out to the Community Center between 4 and 7p.m. for the Ocracoke Transportation Planning Session. Hyde County, the Albemarle Rural Planning Organization (RPO), and NCDOT, invites area residents to attend this public drop-in session for the Hyde County Comprehensive Transportation Plan.  The session will focus on the transportation needs of the entire county through the year 2035. We’re encouraged to stop by anytime to view maps, ask questions, share ideas, and fill out comment forms.

On Wednesday, history will be made! Ocracoke’s first ever baseball team will play in Hatteras at 4p.m. The Dolphins, comprised of middle school boys, will play all their games at Hatteras; Ocracoke does not (yet) have a ballfield. Ocracoke Current will be posting the scores and photos – if you go to a game and take pictures, please let us know! The team has its own webpage as well. Go Dolphins!

If you don’t go to the game, come on out and try to beat Jenny and me at Trivia Night (Gaffer’s, 7p.m.). It’s only a dollar to play, so why not?

On Thursday, March 1st, treat yourself to lunch with the United Methodist Women at the church rec hall. They’ll be serving BBQ sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, drinks and baked goods. Yum!

Thursday's Saltwater Connections has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled for later in the month. The resource team will be sharing their community assessment, compiled by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Division of Community Assistance. The assessment’s purpose is to help Ocracoke create a sustainable community. This is the fifth Saltwater Connections workshop on Ocracoke since January 2011 when the project began. From their email: “North Carolina’s historic coastal communities are facing many challenges – politically, economically, environmentally and socially.  What can we do to achieve sustainability? We have many assets and cultural strength within the community – and we want to keep it that way.  By coming together and visioning our future we can adopt a plan that fits our needs and our vision.  The Creating Sustainable Communities Workshops are here to guide us through the process.”

Mark you calendars now for Friday night’s Ocracoke School Homecoming! Festivities will begin at 5p.m, with the Homecoming Court at 7p.m. Ocracoke Current will provide you with more details as we get nearer the big event.
