Ocracoke for Justice, a new grassroots organization on the island, posted this on their Instagram page this morning:
"Today is the day! Please remember, this march will be SILENT. Please be respectful of others and keep everyone safe by wearing a mask and please maintain social distancing. We will start @ 5pm at the entrance of South Point road. If you are unable to walk, we will be ending at the Community Square to hear some wonderful speakers and musicians. More information and resources about Black Lives Matter will also be provided there. If you are able, bring some cash for a donation. Donations will be split between three organizations we feel best support the cause in North Carolina—more info. on these organizations will also be provided. We have also set up a Gofundme & Venmo for those who do not have cash. Thank you EVERYONE for your support."
Information about the organizations is on their Gofundme page.
On the March for Justice Facebook page, organizers posted: "
Everyone MUST WEAR a face covering, and keep 6 FEET of distance between you and other marchers.
Hyde County deputies will lead and follow up the March in patrol cars. The March has a parade permit from the county manager's office and the deputies are there to protect marchers and keep people safe along the road.
If walking that distance is difficult for you, you are welcome to drive a golf cart (slowly) in the March.
At the end of the March, we will gather (with social distancing) at the Community Square. Musicians and guest speakers will be on the "stage" of the Community Store porch.
Please DON'T PARK in the Community Square parking lot. Parking is available at Mermaid's Folly. Kitty Hawk Kites and the Fudge & Ice Cream Shop will be open and their customers need the parking. And we want more open space for social gathering.
The event will end around 7:30pm. We will observe 8 minutes, 46 seconds of silence at the end in memory of George Floyd."
NC Poet Laureat Jaki Shelton Green and Durham-based cellist Shana Tucker will participate via video feed. Live music will be provided by Gary Mitchell, Coyote, Adrian & Raul, and others.
