Welcome, December! Welcome, visitors! 

Ocracoke looks different this holiday season, but we are still mustering up some Christmas cheer. Here's what's happening on the sandbar....

Monday, December 2:

5am: Ocracoke Evacuation Lifted. Visitors welcome!

6pm: Hyde County Board of Commissioners meeting @ Community Center. Click here to view the agenda and packets. The meeting will take place via teleconferencing equipment in the Hyde County Government Center Multi-Use Room and in the Ocracoke Community Center. The public is invited to attend.

Tuesday, December 3: 

12:00pm: “Operation Ocracoke Christmas/Toys for Tots” Noon-6pm @ Ocracoke Lifesaving Church. Salt & Light Consulting partnered with Hatteras Toys for Tots to provide gifts for children from infant to 17 years old. Parents (a few at a time until all have shopped) will be allowed to come into our temporary store and shop for a set number of items by age and gender for their children. “Christmas Frills” gift wrapping supplies donated by our friends at Cape Fear Community College (Bonnie Sanders Burney Child Development Center) will also be available. 6pm: Annual UMW Christmas Dinner @ at the Community Center, 6pm. All the women in the community are invited to join the potluck. It's one of the loveliest evenings of the year! Please come and bring your favorite dish to share. The gift exchange is optional; bring a small gift if you'd like to participate. 

Wednesday, December 4th:

Thursday, December 5th:  

11:30am: FREE Children's Clothing Closet @ Community Center. 11:30am-5:30pm. Free winter clothes, coats, pajamas, etc. for children from birth -5th grade. This is for families who haven't signed up for clothing through another resource. First come, first served. Sponsored by Beaufort-Hyde Partnership for Children.

3pm: Santa visits the Variety Store on Thursday, December 5th! Come out and get your picture taken on Santa's knee! 3–5pm – Santa's even bringing his sleigh this year and taking kids (of all ages) for a ride! Photos are a gift from the Variety Store.

Friday, December 6th:

3pm: The Giving Tree @ Community Center, 3-6pm. Ocracoke residents are invited to select Christmas decorations to replace those lost in Hurricane Dorian. Come out for an evening of holiday cheer! Cape Hatteras Secondary School students and other volunteers have gathered a HUGE selection of new and gently-used holiday decor for Ocracoke families to take home. 

Saturday, December 7th:

11:00am: Christmas at the Castle Art Fair @ Castle B & B, 11am-4pm: Local artists and crafters will be selling their wares. The featured artist is painter Kitty Mitchell.

11:30am: Latino Festival @ Community Center All day celebration of our Latino community with food, song, and dance! All are welcome! Details TBA. 

1pm: Holiday Decoration Give-away at Village Thrift! Come and get it! 1-4pm on the porch @ Village Thrift. 

Sunday, December 8th: 

Services @ both churches: Ocracoke United Methodist (9am @ Rec Hall) and Ocracoke Assembly of God (Sunday School 10am, services at 11am and 6pm; also Wednesday night service at 7pm).

TBA: Island Santa Delivery/Pick-Up @ NCCAT: The elves are putting in overtime this week to get the sleigh packed for delivery on Sunday, December 8th. Parents of Ocracoke children who filled out Wish Lists can pick up their children's gifts on this date, time TBA. Gifts will only be provided to the child's parent. If you have any questions, please call Lindsay Forde-Smoth at 252-714-3519. Lindsay, who lives in Greenville, partnered with Ocracoke resident Denise Hess and Ocracoke School to provide this service to the community. They are excited and grateful to be part of Ocracoke's holidays.

2pm: Cookie Swap: Ocracoke Friends of the Library annual cookie swap @ Community Center. No ingredients, no problem! Cookie baking kits will be available at the Fire House (or call 252-921-0060) starting Wednesday, December 4th while supplies last. No oven, no problem! Bring a container and take home some cookies, whether you bake or not! Baking cookies? Consider bringing extras to share. Entertainment will be provided by Ocracoke School 5th graders. 

 

Looking ahead....

Next week brings us a special treat on Tuesday, December 10th with the OPS Wassail Party and Community Tree Lighting. 4–6pm at the OPS Museum. OPS will draw the winning ticket for the 2019 Quilt Raffle! Shop at the Museum gift shop for great holiday gifts. FREE and festive! 

This year, Ocracoke School's annual holiday program and the Community Christmas Concert will be combined into one wonderful holiday extravaganza! On Sunday, December 15th at 5pm, join us at the Berkley Barn for a merry & bright Holiday Dinner Show! The Ocracoke Strong kitchen crew, with help from Ocracoke students, will provide a sit-down dinner while performers of all ages share songs and stories of holiday cheer. All are welcome! 

The Ocracoke Lifesaving Church will host the Christmas Eve service this year. Details TBA, but expect to sing carols and see a kids' pageant.
