NPS had already scheduled a cleanup for National Public Lands Day (9/22), but because of the hurricane, Ocracoke needs it more than usual. Residents got a head start and picked up trash all week, but there's still some out there. The Current encourages you to pick up debris (especially plastic) everytime you enjoy the beach -- let's keep it pristine and beautiful for everyone.  

On September 22, from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm, Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) will host drop-in volunteer beach cleanup efforts to celebrate National Public Lands Day.

The Seashore will host volunteer beach cleanup events at the following locations:

• Coquina Beach on Bodie Island (meet park staff at the bathhouse)
• Frisco Bathhouse on Hatteras Island (meet park staff in the parking lot)
• Ocracoke Day Use Area (meet park staff in the parking lot)

Trash bags will be provided. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring leather gloves, water, snacks, and sunscreen. Please wear appropriate clothing, such as closed-toe shoes and hats. 

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands. On National Public Lands Day last year, more than 200,000 volunteers celebrated at more than 2,500 public land sites across the United States.

Volunteers will receive a Federal fee-free coupon (while supplies last). A fee-free coupon provides the volunteer one day of free entry to any participating federal public land, no matter the agency. Each coupon is good for one day of entrance fee or day use fees until Saturday, September 28, 2019. At some public lands, this can include accompanying passengers in a car. The coupons cannot be used for parking fees, camping, tours, or concessions.
