Yes, Ocracoke has gas! And it will be available later today. As a result of the pipeline leak in Alabama, gasoline is in short supply for the entire Southeast region of the country. For the time-being, Ocracoke Station is unable to let anyone pump gas. Owner Sean Death said, “Ocracoke Station got a fuel delivery this morning, so we’re doing better than most in North Carolina in the fact that we actually have fuel. Our fuel came from an alternate refinery and at this time we do not know how much it will cost. We are briefly suspending sales until we find out how much this fuel costs so we can price accordingly. We will be dispensing fuel today; we’re just waiting on the price quote.”
Please remember this situation isn’t the fault of Ocracoke Station or any of the employees; they’re relaying information to residents and visitors when that information becomes available.
In the meantime, don’t fret! There are bicycles and golf carts available to rent for use around the village, and bikes of course can be taken out of the village limits. A bike ride from the National Park Service Visitor Center to the NPS campground – a four-mile trek – will only take about 30 minutes, and there are closer options! The airport (Ramp 70) and Day Use Area are within a two-mile bike ride from the Visitor Center, so while gas may be temporarily in short supply, access to the glorious Ocracoke beaches is not!
As you go about your day, please remember North Carolina’s Governor Pat McCrory declared a State of Emergency. In doing so, McCrory enacted an anti-price gouging law. Ocracoke Station is halting gas sales until a price from their supplier can be determined, preventing any gouging. Once a price from the supplier is given to Ocracoke Station, gas sales will resume.
