The NPS fall program season will run from Tuesday, September 8 through Monday, October 12, 2015.
A variety of programs are offered--all programs are free.
Ocracoke Island
- · Sunday & Saturday at 3:00 p.m. - Banker Ponies: The Banker Ponies are definitely an Ocracoke must-see! Learn more about their mysterious origins, unique physical attributes, and survival skills. Sunscreen is recommended. Ocracoke Pony Pens. (30 min)
- · Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. & Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. - Ocracoke History: Ocracoke Island has an incredibly rich cultural history. Algonquian, pilots, fisherman, pirates, lifesavers, and solders all play a part in this fascinating story. Come find out more about the island and its people. Ocracoke Visitor Center. (30 min)
- · Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. - Pirates!: Ocracoke was a popular place for Blackbeard and other pirates during the early 1700s. Find out why the island was so attractive to them and how the golden age of piracy dramatically ended here. Ocracoke Visitor Center. (30 min)
- · Monday and Friday at 2:00 p.m. & Thursday at 11:00 a.m. - Barrier Island Nature: Learn about sea turtles, shorebirds, seashells, and shoreline migration. Join a ranger for a talk about the wild side of the seashore. Topics will vary daily. Ocracoke Visitor Center. (30 min)
- · Thursday at 8:30 a.m. – Morning Bird Walk: Meet winged residents and those travelling the Atlantic Flyway. Binoculars are available. Meet at the Hatteras Ferry parking lot on the north end of the island. Bring bug spray. (90 min)
By attending programs and completing a workbook, kids can become Junior Rangers. Booklets are free and available at each National Park Service visitor center.
