Hatteras Island Rescue Squad paramedics and NPS Rangers responded to the scene. The victim, a 47 year old male, had been swimming with others when the incident occurred. He received various injuries to his right leg and lower back. He was treated at the scene and then transported by ambulance and airflight to Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA for further care.
No other swimmers were injured. The last known encounter with a shark at the Seashore occurred in 2011 on Ocracoke Island.
There are many inherent dangers while swimming in ocean or sound waters. Swimmers are advised to be aware of conditions and their surroundings.
