National Park Service staff, along with multiple volunteer fire departments including Buxton, Salvo, and Avon Volunteer Fire Departments, North Carolina Forest Service and the US Fish & Wildlife Service, responded to contain the fire south of Little Kinnakeet Lifesaving Station in Cape Hatteras National Seashore during the early morning hours of Saturday, June 13. Fire suppression actions continued through-out the weekend.
No people were injured and no structures were damaged. The cause of the fire is unknown and continues to be under investigation.
The fire was first detected around 11:00 p.m. on June 12 on the soundside near the electrical transmission lines.
