National Park Service staff, along with multiple volunteer fire departments including Buxton, Salvo, and Avon Volunteer Fire Departments, North Carolina Forest Service and the US Fish & Wildlife Service, are currently working to manage a fire, approximately 20 acres in size, located north of the village of Avon, NC and south of Little Kinnakeet Lifesaving Station in Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

No people were injured or are at risk at this time and no structures were damaged. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation. A fire line has been constructed around the perimeter of the fire and the fire is nearly contained.

The fire was first detected around 11:00 p.m. on June 12 on the soundside near the powerline poles. The fire quickly spread eastward with prevailing southwest winds. NC Rt. 12 was completely closed to traffic from 11:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. this morning.

Fire crews continue to secure fire line and will work until the fire is extinguished. The National Park Service wishes to express appreciation for the quick response from local volunteer fire departments, State of North Carolina and US Fish & Wildlife Service.
